Because I realized I haven't watched it since high school and I've durned near forgotten it.
This is unacceptable. And I shall fix it.

My suggestion? Don't. I tried to rewatch it for the same reason as you. It soiled my memories of the show

It's a little worse than I remembered, but not as much as some other shows.
I do highly recommend watching the OVA that came out a couple of years ago. That was a good watch.

I did the same thing with Outlaw Star recently and it had the opposite effect. When I was in high school, I was too young and inexperienced to really understand a lot of the larger themes and meanings behind actions and words. Age added context that ultimately made the show more fulfilling. I'm hoping the same will happen with Trigun- as I didn't really understand the second half of the show as a teenager.
Also, it's been so long that I don't really HAVE many memories of the show. Just small snippets and tidbits. So it's almost like going into the anime for the first time again after waiting a trailer of it, lol.

I need to rewatch Outlaw Star - that was one of my faves back in the day.

It all comes down to your tolerance for goofy. You might try sub instead of dub to blunt that, despite an overall pretty decent dub.
That being said, I endorse this plan.
